Portalegre tem aqui o seu simbolismo
O nome pode não lhe parecer ser único, sobretudo no Alentejo, mas a verdade é que único é este café, situado na Rua do Comércio, é o café típico que ainda permanece em Portalegre, continuando a tradição de um espaço alojado num edifício da primeira metade do século XX, com traços de Arquitectura Modernista.
Um salão imponente e uma cozinha são suficientes para marcar a História de um local e de uma cidade, onde alguns alunos se recordam de ter visto José Régio – poeta ligado a Vila do Conde e Póvoa de Varzim, no Norte de Portugal – mas que por ter sido professor de “Liceu” na cidade do Alto Alentejo frequentava “O Alentejano”, de Portalegre. A mesma cidade que lhe dedica em Casa Museu uma bela colecção de Arte Sacra.
Evidente “sala de visitas” da cidade por entre as sinuosas ruas calcetadas, que o conduzem sempre a mais uma atracção, seja de atracção barroca ou aos requintados museus e fragmentos das muralhas medievais, O “Alentejano” alberga também a tradição académica que reúne estudantes e a vida no Alto Alentejo. O Café merece especial destaque pelo simbolismo que tem para os portalegrenses. A ideia passa única e exclusivamente por preservar a identidade do café, porque só dessa forma se preserva simultaneamente a memória de Portalegre.

The name may not seem to be unique, particularly in the Alentejo, but the truth is that this café is unique, located in the Rua do Comércio, and it is the characteristic café that still remains in Portalegre, continuing the tradition of a space located in a building in the first half of the twentieth century, with traces of Modernist architecture.
An imposing hall and kitchen are enough to mark the History of a place and a city where some students remember seeing Jose Régio – the poet connected to Vila do Conde and Povoa de Varzim in northern Portugal – and when he was a High School teacher in the city of Alto Alentejo, he used to frequent the “Alentejano” in Portalegre.
The same city that opened a House Museum and a beautiful collection of Sacred Art dedicated to him.
An evident "living room" of the city through the winding cobbled streets, which always lead to one more attraction, whether a baroque attraction or the exquisite museums and fragments of medieval walls, the "Alentejano" also houses the academic tradition that brings together students and life in the Alto Alentejo. The Café also deserves special attention through the symbolism it offers to the people of Portalegre.
